Black Carbon:
What it is: Fine, light absorbing particles (a component of soot) formed by the incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, bio fuels and biomass.
Main Sources: Diesel engines, diesel generators, cookstoves, open biomass burning, industrial combustion
Climate Role: Strongly absorbs sunlight, heats the atmosphere, and accelerates ice/snow melt when deposited on surfaces
Key Health Effects: respiratory and cardiovascular harm, including asthma, lung inflammation, heart attacks. It is also linked to increased hospital admissions and premature death.
